Something Other Than a Card

Good morning to all my awesome blogging friends! Today I have something special to show you. This gorgeous diamond willow lamp was a gift from my daughter and son-in-law.
My daughter has been enjoying this hobby for many years and has crafted some magnificent works of art such as lamps, picture frames, candle holders, canes and free-standing coat hangers. She has piqued my son-in-law's interest in this craft as well and it's something they enjoy doing together when they are not canoeing, hunting, camping, etc., etc. The base of the lamp features stones collected along the shores of Lake Superior...she loves collecting agates!
Diamond willow is not a species of willow, but a result of an attack by one or more types of fungus on several pieces of willow. The diamonds are more elongated ovals with pointed ends, but they can also be short and wide. No two are ever alike.
She finds the willow in the swamps in Minnesota. Good quality willow can be found in swamps or along riverbanks. It is an excellent wood to work with and especially great for carving.

Thank you for visiting, dear friends. Hope you have an enjoyable day. Much love, Christina

  1. Wow! What a beautiful gift and in my mind, there's NOTHING better than a gift of something that's hand made! Totally gorgeous, Christina! I love the fact that she even gathers the wood herself! What an expression of love! It's very easy to see she has inherited her Mom's talent for making beautiful works of art! Thanks for sharing it with us!

You can feel all the love and the care Michelle has given to this treasure that nature has provided her with. Thank you for explaining what diamond willow means... I had found it on google, but your explanations are much clearer. as far as the little stones, OH! I just wish I could walk along the shores and pick some. 9. Christina, I love the lamp that Michelle has made for you. It is absolutely stunning. The wood is amazing. I can feel my hand touching the wood and feeling every curve of it. It must be even more pretty in real life. Your room looks like it is in a cabin by the lake, so warm and cozy. Michelle must have inherited the love of wood from her Papa.

  10. Oh my Lord Christina. This lamp is gorgeous. How special!! And with the agates that she collects as well. The wood is so gorgeous. I would love to rub my hand along the wood - it looks so smooth and soft. Your daughter-in-law is very talented and it sounds as if your son and his wife have a very rich (and you know I am not referring to money here) life. Rich in the things that matter.
